In the Classroom!

George Walton Collecting For

Empty Stocking Fund

The Empty Stocking Fund of Walton County started in 1971 as a way to help the hungry and needy families in Walton County during the Christmas holiday through collection and disbursement of both non-perishable and perishable food items.  The main means of collection is through can collections organized by our local schools.  The incredible part of this intra-county campaign is the “full circle” nature of help this service provides.  In 2012, the Empty Stocking Fund of Walton County distributed 400 boxes of food to families within our communities.  The boxes included over 30 cans of food, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, a frozen hen, 5 bags of dry beans, 2 bags of rice, a box of cereal, a box of brownie mix, a pound of sugar, a container of flour, a container of cooking oil, and a box of scalloped potatoes along with several other food containers to each family.  This year we are increasing that number to 500 with the main source of growth coming from identified students with need.

As a general rule we accept non-perishable food items, mainly in the form of non-glass container canned goods, from your staff, students and parents.

Thank you for all that you do to support this and other efforts to lend a helping hand to those in need in Walton County!  In the past George Walton Academy has been the largest contributor to the Empty Stocking Fund.  Please help us continue this tradition of giving by opening your hearts to those in need.  Begin  sending your food items in tomorrow. Know that through your example, you are teaching your children to be gracious and compassionate during this season of thanksgiving.

In addition, Tuesday, December 17th, will be GWA night at the armory.  From 5:00 – 8:00 all willing and able volunteers with ties to GWA are asked to help sort the collected food.  It is sure to be a lot of fun and a great way for GWA to show its community support.  We hope to have a great turn-out with faculty and staff leading the way.

In the Classroom!

Fun with Limericks!

There once was a naughty young fool
Who was distastefully expelled from school
So he shed a tear
To his Mother Dear
And she let him play in the pool

J.P., Helen, & Claire M.

In Spelling we will be on pages 49-52. This is the "Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins" unit.
The focus is on the consonant sounds of /j/, /ks/, /sk/, and /s/. Please study a little each day!

In our story, Poppy, Poppy just barely escapes the talons of Mr. Ocax. As she returns home, she realizes that there has been a very important family meeting called. As we read chapters 4-8 we will learn why Lungwort called a family meeting and why he so desperately needs to meet with Mr. Ocax. Will Poppy continue to be brave? Will Lungwort lead his family in a courageous way?

We're studying similes and metaphors in poetry.

Soccer
The ball is like a car,
When it spins around.
As if it handles like a dream,
And speeds across the ground.
                   James Cruikshank

The SCA is like a brawl with melees and battles.
Quite a lot of them all.
Quite an amazing tale, I want to tell you all.
But sadly, like life, it must come to an end.
                        Liam Chirrey

I love the sound of babies cooing,
It is as soothing as roses blowing in the wind.
I love the sound of pom-poms moving.
It is as loud as hail in a storm on a metal house.
                               Julia Waldo

The Derp Monster
The Derp Monster was as derpy as a derp mistake.
His nose was like a trumpet.
He was as annoying as a baby.
He was like a child.
P.S. He is as dead as a door nail.
                           Rylee Gilreath
